The school education systems across Australia are extremely similar with a few minor differences, usually between the different states and territories.

Primary and secondary education is compulsory in Australia for students between the ages of six to sixteen. These school years are divided into 3 levels namely: Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary. Tertiary education in Australia is inclusive of both higher education (including universities) and Vocational Education and Training (VET).

English is not only the official language of Australia, it is also the main language of instruction in the education system. However, many schools in Australia do offer courses in other languages, as well as bilingual programs.

The school year in Australia begins in January, ending in December. In addition, there are four official school holidays in a school year. Although these school holidays may vary slightly., depending on the state and territory.
